IFIC has conducted its third annual survey, this time calling on our network to share their understanding and experience of the reality of people-centred care.

Key messages

41% have the view that people- centred care means meeting people’s needs and preferences
More people (63%) think care is more people-centred today than it was five years ago, while a significant proportion (18%) think it has gotten less people-centred
37% who see a decline think it is because there are not enough resources invested in health and care

IFIC Annual Survey 2024

In 2022, IFIC’s first annual survey focused on what features of integrated care mattered to our network. In 2023, we looked more closely at the advancement of continuous and coordinated care.

This year’s survey focused on people-centred care. The main survey question was: To what extent do people think that people-centred care is being delivered today in health and care systems, based on the needs, preferences, and values of people at the centre of care.

We identified five dimensions of people-centred care from the point of view of the person at the centre:

  1. I am involved in decision-making about all aspects of my care.
  2. Health and care providers understand what people-centred care is and this shows in the way they communicate and work with me.
  3. My care plan is co-created with me based on what matters to me and there are clear processes to support this.
  4. What matters to me in my care has the same importance as other clinical and social outcomes.
  5. My care is coordinated across different organisations involved.

Who did we ask?

The online survey was distributed to IFIC’s global network, which encompasses more than 23,000 people that were in the IFIC database and distribution list when the survey was launched. A total of 576 valid responses were received.

We clustered responses into three stakeholder groups for analysis:

  1. Person at the centre of care or accessing services
  2. Health and care provider
  3. Policymaker or academic and/or researcher

What did we find?

There are more people who think people-centred care has improved over the past five years than not but still with room for further improvement.

The survey respondents had a positive view of people-centred care by health and care providers, a mixed view from people at the centre of care but more negative view from policymakers and researchers.

When we look at the survey results against the five dimensions by groups of respondents there was a more positive perception of those dimensions the closer we are to the person at the centre of care, that is, the more direct control they have over the levers of people-centredness.
