Each year the Avedis Donabedian Foundation honours leaders in the field of quality in healthcare: persons or institutions that have made a substantial contribution to healthcare excellence in Catalonia. Previous recipients include Sir Michael Marmot and Sir Liam Donaldson and Professors Julio Frenk, Martin McKee, Chris Ham, Richard Grol, Jon Ovretveit, Angela Coulter and Barbara Starfield.

In explaining their decision, the awards jury noted: “Dr Goodwin has an impressive trajectory in promoting and supporting integrated care and specially to make visible the trend in our Health System on collaboration between health care and social care (shared by most countries in Europe) and the required changes we will need to face in the future. His contributions on strategies of change in health care enlighten quality programs all over the world. As a result, he is clearly an outstanding leader and advocate for advancing quality in healthcare.”

Dr Goodwin accepted the award during a ceremony held at Barcelona’s historic Palau de la Musica on the 14th January. In accepting the award Dr Goodwin commented how it “recognises that the true significance of the integrated care movement centres on improving quality of care, and quality of life, to people and communities … particularly to the old and most vulnerable in society”.

Dr. Goodwin paid tribute to the Board members and staff of the International Foundation for Integrated Care for their vision, passion, commitment and support without which such an award would not have been possible.

The 16th International Conference on Integrated Care will be held in Barcelona on 23-25 May 2016
